Contented Critters "no kill" animal sanctuary is located in Makinen, Minnesota.
We are a volunteer run organization that is dedicated to the rescue, care, and relocation of animals in need. The majority of the animals coming through our doors are dogs and cats. However, no injured creature that is not in another shelter's contract area, is ever turned away.
Many of these animals are found abandoned. Some have been rescued from bad situations and some were simply dropped off by owners who can no longer care for them.
Regardless of breed, age or situation, we provide these animals with appropriate veterinary care and keep them happy and health, until suitable loving homes can be found for them.
No cat or dog leaves Contented Critters without being spayed or neutered!

Meet Murphy. Murphy is approximately 3 yrs old and is a male Boxer Lab mix. He is a JOY! I cannot believe this guy is still with us, I thought for sure he would go right away. Murphy was adopted once and brought back the next day because he didn't like their cat. I feel the new owners probably could have introduced him better, not so rushed. He may be a dog that just doesn't like cats (so heads up on that) or maybe a slower introduction where Murphy KNOWS he and the Cat belong there might work. The people who tried adopting him, said other than the cat, he was wonderful in the house . Murphy likes ALL humans and Some other dogs. He is very good around children. He LOVES to play fetch and chase me games. He would make such an awesome family companion for the right family. I LOVE THIS DOG.. I would love to see him get placed for winter and snoozing with a kid or laying on the couch snuggled in with his new family. Please call if you would like to make this great dog a part of your family. 218-638-2153. Hours are weekdays from 10 -3 and weekends from 10-1. After hour appointments can be arranged.
1-12-15 MURPHY was brought back. Once again , by no fault of his own. The owners felt he had to much energy. Lets keep in mind that Murphy has spent most of his almost 3 years of life in a Shelter. How do you expect him to be settled in in 2 days. That is the time frame he had to adjust. Two days. So once again, Murphy gets a little taste of the good life, warm house, attention, loving, and then BAM back at the shelter. I am so frustrated, I was ready to throw in the towel and quit working at the shelter, because I cant take the hurt in his eyes ,of why he had to come back. I don't think people realize the affect it has on them. He was brought to a shelter as a pup because he had elderly owners who couldn't handle a pup (HUMAN mistake #1) then the shelter was overcrowded and asked us to take him because he was to nice of a dog to put down. Second time he is brought to a shelter. Then he is adopted out TWICE by us and brought back because of HUMAN errors, not his. His last adopters said they didn't even tie him out and he didn't go anywhere. Pretty loyal for only knowing the people for a day. (oh by the way, I would NEVER turn a dog out loose in the first Days of having them.) This time being brought back is taking a toll on this beautiful boy. I just shake my head, these people didn't even realize what a good dog they had, because as humans we expect PERFECTION instantly. Maybe these homes didn't work because the one he truly deserves is right around the corner. I hope so. Please help me find Murphy his forever home.
